Who are the Batjala People?

The Batjala People also known as the "Butchulla" People are the Traditional Owners of K'gari (Fraser Island) & the adjacent mainland encompassing Hervey Bay & Maryborough, located in the Fraser coast region of Queensland, Australia.

Do the Batjala People have Native Title?

Yes. The majority of staff and members of the Sovereign Batjala Council are Native Title Holders. The Batjala People received consent determination from the Australian Federal Court in No. QUD 460/2018 Gemma Cronin on behalf of the Butchulla People Land & Sea Claim #2, on the 10th December 2019, which gave the Batjala People rights to the use, occupation & enjoyment of their tribal lands.
